At one time, Fyodor Hobbes was an Andoran political writer touting the need to avoid civil unrest at all costs. He was an avid denouncer of the rebellion against Cheliax. When the war ended and Andoran stood victorious, Hobbes and his family were the victim of many death threats. Many felt he was a traitor, but all he wanted was to avoid the bloodshed of his brothers and sisters.
Hobbes left Andoran for greater Cheliax and was received and celebrated as a hero. His books gained even more traction with the backing of the state and he became a counsellor in House Thrune. After lobbying unsuccessfully for better treatment of slaves a little too aggressively, Hobbes found himself and his family stripped of all their luxuries and freedom. He was beaten with such severity that the once brilliant philosopher suffered severe brain damage.
Hobbes eventually escaped bondage with the help of influential Adoren friends. He now bears the marks of years of abuse under the tyrannical regime of Cheliax: Every part of his body is scarred with whip lashings and the mark of Asmodeus has been branded into his shoulders and back.
Now, Hobbes cannot even read the books he once penned. He is still plagued with the nightmare of watching the torture and enslaving of his wife and children. His once influential tongue is heavy with the weight of random, non-sensical mutterings.
Though he cannot articulate his thoughts well and struggles with conjuring them at all, Hobbes still possess a complex insight. His experiences have led him to understand the value of freedom and the need to fight for that liberty.
Designer Notes
Hobbes is based on the Bristish philosopher Thomas Hobbes. Hobbes argued that when a social contract installed a soverign it was his job to maintain order and the people’s place to obey. Further, he explained that the Sovereign was allowed to use any mechanism to maintain order even breaking any other stipulation of the social contract. Under no circumstance did the people have the moral right to engage in civil war against the sovereign. Hobbes was the philosopher that game me the most fits in college, because he was so blinded with the need to avoid civil war that he missed the fact a dictatorship can create all the same travesties, just more efficiently.
